Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev were among the Russian players unable to reach Indian Wells in time for Tuesday's exhibition event after travel disruptions caused by the escalating crisis in the Middle East. The US and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran over the weekend, leading to airspace closures and widespread flight cancellations across the Gulf region, disrupting a key transit hub.
Medvedev, a two-time finalist at Indian Wells and seeded 11th, had been scheduled to play in the Eisenhower Cup alongside compatriot Mirra Andreeva. Rublev, the 17th seed, was paired with American Amanda Anisimova. Both players are due to begin their singles campaigns on Friday, with their arrival now uncertain.
British defending champion Jack Draper expressed concern, saying: “I was in Dubai last week. I managed to get away almost probably one of the last flights out. I just hope the players and all the staff within the ATP are able to make it here. The main thing is that they’re safe.” American star Coco Gauff revealed her coach, Gavin MacMillan, was among those stranded, adding: “I just want him to be safe.”
The conflict also forced the abrupt cancellation of an ATP Challenger event in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, after a security alert sent players and officials fleeing. The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) offered to cover half the cost of charter flights at €5,000 per person, urging the ATP Tour to pay the rest. Belarusian player Ilya Ivashka later confirmed on Instagram that the ATP had stepped in to cover all evacuation costs, calling it a “class act.”
