Lewis Hamilton's podium finish at the British Grand Prix was overshadowed by a post-race investigation that resulted in his first reprimand of the season. The seven-time world champion secured third place at Silverstone on Sunday, behind George Russell and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, but faced scrutiny for a yellow-flag infringement.
Hamilton's Penalty and Reprimand
Hamilton was handed a five-second time penalty for a false start, which he served during his initial pit stop. After the race, reports emerged that he would need to visit the stewards regarding a yellow-flag breach. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Hamilton said: "I'm probably going to get a penalty right now as well... I went through a yellow flag. Jumped the start, yellow flag – when it rains, it pours."
The stewards confirmed that Hamilton "failed to slow for a single yellow flag at Turn 9 on Lap 38." The verdict document explained that Hamilton entered the sector before the yellow flag or yellow light panel appeared, and the yellow indication on his steering wheel display "only appeared once the driver was already on the straight towards Turn 10 and close to the end of the yellow flag zone." As a result, he received a reprimand, his first of the season.
Carlos Sainz's Unusual Penalty
Carlos Sainz also faced an unusual penalty during the race. The Williams driver was hit with a penalty lap after incorrectly unlapping himself under Article B5.13.4c of the FIA F1 Regulations. The 52-lap race ended behind the Safety Car after Max Verstappen's crash, allowing lapped drivers to overtake the Safety Car and rejoin the pack at the rear. Sainz was among those who did so, but his actions were deemed incorrect. The penalty dropped him from 12th to 17th place, marking his fourth consecutive race without points.
Hamilton's Record at Silverstone
Despite the penalties, Hamilton extended his record at the British Grand Prix. The 41-year-old achieved his 15th podium at Silverstone, more than any other driver in Formula One history. He was unable to add to his record nine victories at the venue but maintained his standing as the most successful driver at the circuit.
