Almost half of Britons say sharing their World Cup experience with loved ones matters more than the result, according to a study by prize firm Elite Competitions. The research reveals that 47% of respondents prioritise atmosphere and togetherness over the match outcome, highlighting how the tournament has become a social event beyond football.
Home Viewing Dominates
More than two-thirds of Brits (67%) plan to watch the majority of matches from home, driven by comfort, atmosphere, and convenience. However, half (50%) say they would ideally experience major sporting moments live, whether abroad or as a once-in-a-lifetime event. The findings show a nation split between home comfort and the lure of a sporting adventure.
Investing in the Experience
To recreate a 'true matchday atmosphere', 41% of people are upgrading their home setups. A quarter (25%) plan to improve their viewing equipment, while 33% expect to spend over £100 on preparations. Half of sports fans intend to host friends and family, underscoring the World Cup as a social occasion.
Alex Beckett, CEO and founder of Elite Competitions, said: "The World Cup has become one of those moments that goes beyond football. It is about how people experience it, whether that's at home with friends, creating an amazing atmosphere or being there in person. What's really interesting is how people are investing in those experiences in different ways by upgrading their homes, planning social gatherings or dreaming of being part of something bigger."
