But despite his lengthy spell away from the dugout, Frank McAvennie believes Souness could be the perfect man to replace Steve Clarke. And the ex-Celtic striker has urged the Scotland icon to follow Martin O’Neill’s example by making a shock return to management.
He told the Let Me Be Frank podcast: "Why not? He walks into that dressing room and there's instant acceptance. What are the pros and cons? Well, he's 73 now but look at Martin. Martin's day-to-day, Scotland isn't day-to-day. I'm flinging him into the hat. There was John McGlynn mentioned and all of that... Graeme's an international. He walks anywhere in the world and everyone knows him. That's what you need as an international manager, I think."
