Fleetwood Opens with 67 at Renaissance Club
Tommy Fleetwood fired a sharp three-under-par 67 on the opening day of the Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club, quickly moving into title contention. The Englishman is chasing both the Scottish Open trophy and a major breakthrough at next week's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, a course he knows well.
Reflecting on a Moment of Fortune
Fleetwood admitted to a slice of luck during his round. After a bogey on the second hole, he rebounded with an immediate birdie, describing it as a "nice bounce back." He said: "I didn't get off to the greatest of starts, I was fortunate to get a nice bounce back birdie as soon as I made bogey. Just solid."
Form and Mindset Ahead of The Open
The 35-year-old, who lost in a play-off to Aaron Rai at this event six years ago, is pleased with his current form. He said: "Golf can change on any given day, of course. But there's nothing I'm particularly searching for. I think over the last few weeks, I've put myself in good positions a lot and haven't sort of had the results that I feel like my golf has maybe warranted. So I quite like where I'm at."
Fleetwood acknowledged the challenge of balancing focus on the Scottish Open with the looming Open Championship. "This time of the year, of course for a lot of us The Open is around the corner and where a lot of people's ultimate dreams lie," he said. "I think managing that side of it and just going out and playing golf and enjoying it is sometimes the hardest thing to do, but hopefully I can stay in that frame of mind."
Course Conditions and Strategy
Fleetwood noted the increasingly firm conditions at the Renaissance Club. "The course is getting firmer and firmer. It was pretty tough. I felt like it was hard to get close, so it's not that easy to make birdie. I think you had to make the most of the odd scorable hole there was," he explained.
With two rounds remaining, Fleetwood is well-positioned to contend for the Scottish Open title before turning his attention to Royal Birkdale, where he hopes to fulfil his ultimate golf dream.
