Enzo Maresca has already started his new role as Manchester City manager, despite the club not yet officially announcing him as Pep Guardiola's successor. The Italian has been at City's training ground this week, familiarising himself with the facilities and beginning preparations for the upcoming season.
Maresca Begins Groundwork
Maresca, who was sacked by Chelsea in January, has been studying data on each member of the City squad to devise pre-season training sessions. The squad will return to Manchester next month, though some players will report later due to their involvement in the World Cup in North America.
He has agreed a three-year deal at the Etihad and is expected to meet senior club figures next week to discuss expectations. Chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak has been negotiating a compensation package with Chelsea to secure Maresca's release.
Following Guardiola's Legacy
Guardiola decided to step down last summer but kept his decision private, known only to a few close associates. During his decade at City, he won 20 trophies, including the Treble in 2023. Maresca acknowledges the challenge of succeeding Guardiola, describing it as an impossible task.
Maresca previously served as Guardiola's assistant at City, providing him with insight into the club's culture and expectations.
Transfer Activity and Squad Changes
Maresca's start has been boosted by City's British record signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, potentially rising to £130 million. However, the new era begins without Bernardo Silva, who left upon contract expiry to join Real Madrid. John Stones has also departed the Etihad.
City face a period of transition as they adapt to life after Guardiola and several key players.
