Harvey Elliott has spoken about his difficult loan spell at Aston Villa last season, describing it as a learning curve and expressing gratitude for a second chance at Liverpool under new manager Andoni Iraola.
The 23-year-old midfielder made only one Premier League start for Villa and nine appearances in all competitions due to a clause that would have triggered a £35 million permanent transfer after his tenth game. He was often left out of squads by Unai Emery, a situation he found mentally draining.
Second Chance Under Iraola
Elliott is now back at Liverpool for pre-season and has already played in two friendlies for Iraola. He views the change in coaching staff as an opportunity to re-establish himself at Anfield.
“Unfortunately, it didn't work out, but the way I see it is that's last season now, I'm here. It's kind of a second chance, if you want to call it,” Elliott said. “Especially with the gaffer and new coaching staff coming in. It's another chance to impress and hopefully get in their (good) books.”
No Hard Feelings
Despite his limited playing time, Elliott holds no ill will toward Aston Villa and was pleased to be part of their historic Europa League triumph. He described the experience as a tough but valuable lesson.
“Mentally, it was a very tough one. As I said, it was a learning curve. It was an opportunity for me to experience something new, as much as I didn't want to do it, and I don't wish it upon any other player, because it's not nice at all, but I have no hard feelings,” he added.
Elliott's lack of game time also cost him a chance to make Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad. He is now focused solely on his future at Liverpool. “I'm here now, and I'm trying to cement my spot in the team or within the squad,” he said.
