Djokovic Breaks Silence on Wimbledon Outburst, Stripped of Prize Money

Novak Djokovic has broken his silence after a heated confrontation with a Wimbledon official during his quarter-final match, which resulted in him being stripped of part of his prize money. The seven-time Wimbledon champion advanced to the semi-finals with a marathon five-set victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime, becoming the oldest man to feature in a singles match at SW19 at age 39. However, the win was overshadowed by controversy as Djokovic let rip at tournament referee Denise Parnell over the timing of the roof closure.

Djokovic's Outburst Over Roof Closure

During the second set of the quarter-final, the umpire announced at 7:40pm that the roof would be closed due to fading light, despite the match being even. Djokovic furiously argued that another set could be played in daylight. He launched into an on-court rant, telling officials: "You're so proud of your rules, and you're not sticking to any kind of rule, we have no idea what the rule is." His pleas were ignored, and the roof was closed.

In his post-match press conference, Djokovic expressed his frustration, stating: "I feel like I played more of an indoor tournament than outdoor, to be honest." The incident has sparked debate about the consistency of Wimbledon's rules regarding the roof and light conditions.

Fine for Audible Obscenity

During the first set of Djokovic's victory, Wimbledon announced that he would be fined £5,600 for an "audible obscenity" offence. The fine was likely related to Djokovic shouting "bull****" and a series of expletives in Serbian during his fourth-round win over Roman Safiullin. Djokovic is one of 17 players punished by the All England Club since the tournament began.

Other players fined include rising star Joao Fonseca, who received the same amount for racket abuse, and Hubert Hurkacz, also fined £5,600 for an audible obscenity. British star Julian Cash faced a similar penalty. Djokovic is guaranteed at least £900,000 for reaching the semi-finals, but a portion of that will be deducted due to the fine.

Next Opponent: Jannik Sinner

Djokovic will next face world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. Sinner has not dropped a single set since his first-round match and has faced no seeded players en route to the final four. Both players have two days of rest before their clash on Friday, which promises to be a highly anticipated encounter.
