Cody Gakpo is reportedly pursuing a move to Manchester City over Tottenham Hotspur this summer. The Liverpool winger is said to have ruled out a transfer to Spurs.
Gakpo's Preferred Destination
Roberto De Zerbi has been chasing attacking reinforcements following a difficult period at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs have finished 17th in the past two Premier League campaigns.
Forwards Omar Marmoush and Savio have arrived from City to strengthen the Lily Whites' frontline. It was anticipated that Gakpo might follow suit. However, The Athletic now report that the 27-year-old is more attracted to joining Enzo Maresca's squad. It is understood that all parties are now in discussions to strike an agreement.
Liverpool Context
The Netherlands international featured from the start and delivered an assist in Liverpool's 2-2 stalemate at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Gakpo's prospective switch to City emerges as Liverpool edge closer to securing winger Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.
Reds head coach Andoni Iraola stated earlier this week that he "cannot guarantee anything" concerning Gakpo's future at Anfield.
Tottenham's Troubles
The former PSV Eindhoven ace could now be bound for East Manchester rather than north London. The development adds to a difficult period for De Zerbi's side.
Tottenham collapsed in a 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United on Saturday evening. It follows last weekend's 3-0 reverse at Brentford.
Spurs have failed to find the back of the net in their first two league matches for the first time since the 1992/93 season. There may now be a frantic rush to bolster the squad before the summer transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday.
Departures are also likely, with De Zerbi confirming in his post-match press conference on Saturday that Richarlison, Kevin Danso, and Ismaila Sarr have all requested to leave Tottenham.
He said: "Richarlison, he said too many times that he wanted to leave. Danso came to me two days ago and said he wanted to leave.
"Sarr is the same, but he also suffered a small injury, but he is almost ready to train. I love these players, and these are great guys.
"I have very good relationships, but if they want to leave, they have to bring the economic solution to the club, and they can go, and we'll find other players."
Spurs return to action on Saturday, September 5, at Nottingham Forest.
