Adding a clean, dry towel to your tumble dryer load can cut running time and save money during the winter months, according to Michelle Feng, a washing machine expert from Hisense.
Feng explained: "Adding a clean, dry towel to the drum is a simple way to cut your tumble dryer's running time and save money." The towel soaks up surplus moisture from clothes and helps air circulate more freely around the drum.
Extra Items That Boost Drying
A clean tennis ball can also be placed in the drum during the drying cycle. This boosts airflow and helps accelerate the drying process inside the drum. The ball also reduces creases and naturally softens fabrics, giving a superior end result.
Other Ways to Speed Up Drying
If clothes tend to smell damp or musty after drying, running an additional spin cycle once the wash finishes can draw out more moisture, leaving laundry slightly drier before it comes out of the machine.
For those without a tumble dryer, opening windows in the room where wet washing is drying and avoiding cramming garments together on the airer can help. A dehumidifier may also be used to extract some of the dampness, and a heated clothes airer can be an excellent method for drying laundry during winter.
