Liverpool's pursuit of a new winger this summer has been met with a significant recommendation from former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly, who has advised Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola to reject a move to Anfield. The 23-year-old, currently representing France at the World Cup, has been linked with a £100 million-plus transfer to the Reds, with Arsenal also showing interest. Desailly, a former French international, urged Barcola to continue his development at PSG rather than move to the Premier League.
Desailly's Warning on Barcola's Readiness
Speaking to the Mirror, Desailly expressed doubts about Barcola's defensive discipline, stating: "Barcola doesn't need to leave PSG. He's too young. Didier Deschamps is teaching him a lesson and giving him a chance. I thought that for Barcola to start and play 90 minutes at the international level, he wouldn't do it because Barcola is too light on defensive discipline." Desailly highlighted that the winger's lack of defensive effort could be a weakness in a system with four offensive players. "He's young; the attention and defensive alertness isn't there to match the speed he projects when he's going forward. He wasn't making the effort to get back into position. So, should he move to the Premier League? Not yet. Not yet at all. Sorry Arsenal and Liverpool fans. He should stay at Paris Saint-Germain, play 25 games a season, and grow within that system."
Liverpool's Transfer Plans Amid World Cup Hurdles
Liverpool have so far made only one signing this summer, Victor Munoz from Osasuna, as new manager Andoni Iraola assesses his squad. The World Cup presents a significant challenge for clubs looking to finalize deals quickly, but further arrivals are expected. Barcola remains a key target, though PSG have insisted they have no intention of selling the winger, valued at over £100 million.
Mohamed Salah's Future Becomes Clearer
Meanwhile, the future of former Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is becoming clearer after his departure from Anfield this summer. Italian clubs Roma and Juventus have reportedly explored the possibility of signing the 34-year-old, but financial hurdles may prevent a move. Salah is expected to demand a high salary, with Saudi Arabian clubs showing sustained interest. The United States and Turkish clubs have also been mentioned as potential destinations. Speaking before the World Cup, Salah said: "I am still assessing things. I have time now. I am going to the World Cup and then everything will become clear."
