Arsenal Boosted as Bouaddi Avoids AFCON Disruption

Arsenal have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, as the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will not disrupt the upcoming Premier League season. The Gunners are among several clubs interested in the 18-year-old, whose performances for Morocco have attracted widespread attention.

Transfer Details and Contract

Lille have placed a £70 million valuation on Bouaddi, who signed a new contract in December 2024, extending his stay until 2029. Arsenal have held initial talks over a summer transfer as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his midfield options.

If Arsenal secure Bouaddi's signature before the transfer window closes, Arteta would benefit from the player's availability throughout the entire 2026-27 season. This is because the next AFCON, scheduled for 2027, will take place after the domestic season ends.

AFCON 2027 Schedule

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the 2027 tournament will be held in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027. This marks the first time AFCON will be staged in East Africa since Ethiopia hosted in 1976.

CAF stated: “The competition will begin on Saturday, 19 June 2027, with the opening match. The final will be played on Saturday, 17 July 2027. These dates give the tournament a clear one-month window and allow CAF, the hosts, teams, broadcasters and supporters to plan well in advance.”

As a result, clubs will not lose key African players mid-season, unlike previous editions. This benefits not only Arsenal but also Liverpool, who are exploring a deal for Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande, and Manchester United, who will not face losing Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, or Noussair Mazraoui.

Bouaddi's International Allegiance

Bouaddi previously represented France at youth levels, captaining the U21 side, but switched his international allegiance to Morocco last month. He made his debut against Burundi in a pre-World Cup friendly. Morocco have been drawn in Group A for AFCON 2027 alongside Gabon, Niger, and Lesotho. The top two teams from each group qualify automatically.

Arsenal's interest in Bouaddi signals their intent to build for the future, with the teenager seen as a long-term midfield prospect under Arteta.
