Carlos Alcaraz has revealed he will mark his first Australian Open title with a tattoo of a kangaroo, completing his career grand slam at the age of 22. The Spaniard defeated Novak Djokovic in the final in Melbourne to become the youngest man to win all four major tournaments.
Alcaraz has a tradition of commemorating his grand slam victories with ink. He has a strawberry for Wimbledon, an Eiffel Tower for the French Open, and the Statue of Liberty for his second US Open title. The kangaroo will join them on his leg, close to the Wimbledon or French Open tattoo. 'I've got to choose a good spot,' he said.
The world No 1 had never progressed beyond the quarter-finals in Melbourne before this year. He credited his mental strength and ambition for the breakthrough, saying, 'I was hungry for more... it is a dream come true.' Alcaraz also emphasised the importance of appreciating his achievements, stating he wants to 'enjoy and appreciate the life you're living'.
The victory also denied Djokovic his own slice of history, as Alcaraz completed the set in record time. He entered the season after parting ways with long-time coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, making the grand slam triumph even more significant.
