Carlos Alcaraz's French Open Defence in Doubt as Wrist Injury Tests Loom
Alcaraz French Open Defence at Risk Over Wrist Injury Tests

Carlos Alcaraz's French Open Title Defence Hangs in the Balance

Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning French Open champion, faces an anxious wait for test results on a wrist injury that threatens to derail his title defence in Paris next month. The seven-time Grand Slam winner sustained the injury during the first round of the Barcelona Open earlier this month, forcing his withdrawal from that tournament and subsequent absence from the Madrid Open.

Injury Severity Exceeds Initial Expectations

Medical scans have revealed the wrist issue is more serious than first anticipated, prompting Alcaraz to take a cautious approach. This marks the second consecutive year the 22-year-old Spanish star has missed the Madrid Open, having also sat out last season due to a right leg injury. The timing could not be worse, with the French Open scheduled to commence on 24 May.

"The next test will be crucial," Alcaraz told Spanish television channel TVE. "We've been trying to do everything we can to make sure that this test goes well. I'm trying to be very patient. But we are good, we are just waiting a little bit."

He added: "We have a few tests in the next few days and then we will see how the injury is, and what the next steps will be."

Recent Setbacks and Laureus Recognition

The injury comes amid a mixed period for Alcaraz. Just days before his Barcelona opener, where he defeated Otto Virtanen, he lost the Monte Carlo Masters final to Jannik Sinner, surrendering the world number one ranking to the Italian. However, on a positive note, Alcaraz was crowned Sportsman of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards on Monday.

Despite this accolade, the focus remains squarely on his fitness. Alcaraz has admitted the injury "is more serious than any of us expected" and emphasised the need to "listen to my body" to prevent further damage.

Upcoming Schedule and Decision Timeline

With the French Open fast approaching, Alcaraz's next potential tournament is the Italian Open in Rome next month. The test results in the coming days will be pivotal in determining his participation and readiness for the clay-court Grand Slam. Tennis fans and analysts alike are holding their breath, as Alcaraz's presence is seen as vital for a competitive and thrilling championship.
