Alcaraz Faces Safiullin in US Open Return; Sabalenka Draw Tough

Carlos Alcaraz will begin his US Open campaign against Roman Safiullin, while Aryna Sabalenka has been given a tricky draw in the year's final Grand Slam.

Alcaraz's Path

The Spanish third seed, returning to Flushing Meadows after skipping the tournament last year, faces the Russian world number 43 in the first round. Alcaraz has won all three of his previous meetings with Safiullin, including a straight-sets victory in the second round at Wimbledon in 2023.

Should he advance, Alcaraz could meet fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round, with a potential quarter-final clash against world number two Jannik Sinner looming.

Sabalenka's Challenge

Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one and defending champion, has been placed in the same half of the draw as world number three Coco Gauff, meaning the pair could meet in the semi-finals. The Belarusian opens against a qualifier and is projected to face Naomi Osaka in the third round.

Sabalenka is aiming to become the first woman to win back-to-back US Open titles since Serena Williams in 2014.
