The search continues for two men who vanished during a traditional Christmas Day sea swim off the coast of Devon, which turned perilous due to stormy conditions.
Community in Mourning After Festive Tragedy
Matthew Upham, a 63-year-old antiques dealer, has been formally named as one of the two individuals still missing. The incident occurred on 25 December 2025 during the annual festive dip at Budleigh Salterton. While a number of participants were rescued from the turbulent water and either checked by paramedics or taken to hospital as a precaution, Mr Upham and another man, who is in his 40s, could not be found.
A heartfelt statement shared on the Instagram account of Mr Upham's business conveyed his family's profound grief. The message described him as "deeply loved" and said he would be "forever missed". Friends echoed this sentiment online, with one paying tribute to "the kindest person" and "a shining star" whose absence would be felt by the world.
Dangerous Conditions Described by Witnesses
Local resident Julia Robb, who was observing the swimmers before the men disappeared, provided a stark account of the situation. She reported the weather as "very cold and windy", with waves estimated to be at least six feet high. Another swimmer, 60-year-old Mike Brown, recounted his own struggle, stating he was "unable to get out" of the sea and required assistance from two other brave individuals.
The scale of the emergency response was significant. The rescue operation involved three RNLI lifeboats and two aircraft, scouring the area in a bid to locate the missing men. Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that the families of both men are being kept informed of all developments.
Authorities Issue Stern Winter Swimming Warning
In the wake of the tragedy, local authorities and police have issued urgent warnings to the public. They are advising against venturing into the sea over the festive period due to the challenging combination of choppy conditions and freezing temperatures. This incident has underscored the inherent dangers of winter sea swimming, even during communal traditions.
It is noted that the Budleigh Salterton event is no longer an organised charity swim but persists as an unofficial gathering maintained by local residents and visitors. Notably, several other scheduled Christmas and Boxing Day swims in Devon and Cornwall were cancelled this year due to an active yellow weather warning for wind.
The community has begun to come to terms with the shocking event, with moving tributes left at the shore on Boxing Day. The search effort, now in its recovery phase, casts a shadow over the coastal town as it grapples with the loss.
