Scotland's World Cup campaign has officially ended after Saturday's results in Group L confirmed their elimination. Steve Clarke's side failed to finish among the top eight third-placed teams, ending their hopes of reaching the knockout phase for the first time.
Group Stage Performance
Scotland secured three points from their three group matches, with a goal difference of minus three. They opened with a 1-0 victory over Haiti in Boston, but consecutive losses to Morocco (1-0) and Brazil (3-0) in Miami sealed their fate. The team managed only a single goal throughout the tournament.
Croatia's 2-1 win over Ghana on Saturday made Scotland's elimination official, though it had appeared increasingly likely after the heavy defeat to Brazil. Clarke admitted after the Brazil match that the team feared their World Cup was over.
Manager's Future
Despite the early exit, manager Steve Clarke's position remains secure. The 62-year-old signed a four-year contract with the Scottish FA just before the World Cup, a deal defended by SFA officials despite some criticism. Clarke was uncharacteristically critical of his team after the Brazil loss, stating, "We have to be better if we want to compete at this level."
This marks Scotland's third major tournament under Clarke, with the team winning just one game and scoring only four goals across those competitions. The World Cup exit may also signal the end of international careers for several experienced but ageing squad members.
Next Steps
Scotland will return to action in September for Nations League matches against Slovenia and Switzerland. The team had been training in Charlotte but will now head home after their elimination.
