Rangers in Advanced Talks to Appoint Derek McInnes as Manager
Rangers Close to Appointing Derek McInnes as Manager

Rangers are looking to time the appointment of Derek McInnes with Danny Rohl's departure. Red Bull Salzburg has agreed a seven-figure compensation package for Rohl, who is now finalising his move to the Austrian side. The Glasgow giants are at an advanced stage in appointing a successor, having held talks with McInnes and at least one other candidate over the past 12 hours.

McInnes Emerges as Favourite

The Hearts manager and former Rangers player McInnes is now the firm favourite for the Ibrox job. The Jambos will allow their manager to go if they receive their agreed-upon compensation figure. Owner Andrew Cavenagh, along with chief executive Jim Gillespie and others, are due to meet in Boston on Saturday to finalise their next managerial appointment. It is expected that the appointment of McInnes will be rubber-stamped.

McInnes's Rangers Connection

The 54-year-old wouldn't turn down Rangers for a second time. He rejected the Ibrox side when he was at Aberdeen back in 2017, having agreed to take the job and then performed a late U-turn. McInnes had five years as a player at Rangers from 1995. He led Aberdeen to League Cup glory, and his other successes include the Championship with St Johnstone and Kilmarnock. He led Hearts to second place last season, above Rangers.

Rohl's Departure

Red Bull have been in talks with Rangers for the best part of a week over a move for Rohl. He previously worked as a coach with Red Bull Leipzig. They want him to get their Austrian club back firing after falling behind LASK and Sturm Graz in recent seasons. The move suits all parties, with some sections of the Rangers support turning against Rohl after last season's late collapse.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss came in and got them back into the title race after Russell Martin's disastrous start. He got Rangers in title contention, but they fell away in the top six split. McInnes is expected to be in position for the Rangers' squad's return to pre-season.
