New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has added his voice to the controversy surrounding Egypt's World Cup defeat to Argentina, referencing the match during a speech on Wednesday. The last-16 clash, which Argentina won 3-2, has sparked allegations of match-fixing after a contentious VAR decision disallowed an Egyptian goal.
Mayor's Remarks at Bus Initiative Launch
Speaking at the launch of the "Next Stop: Better Buses, Faster Service" plan, Mamdani highlighted the time-saving benefits of the initiative. He noted that commuters would save 24 hours over six months and more than two days over a year. He then linked the savings to everyday activities, including "agreeing with your friends that Egypt were robbed yesterday."
VAR Controversy and Egyptian Outrage
The controversy stems from a second-half incident where Egypt's Mostafa Zico scored, but VAR disallowed the goal after determining a foul occurred over 20 seconds earlier. Despite Egypt equalising shortly after, Argentina scored twice in the final 20 minutes to seal victory. Egypt's players and the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) expressed fury over the officiating.
EFA submitted a formal complaint against French referee Francois Letexier and his team. In a statement, the EFA cited "serious concerns" about VAR usage and called for "the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and transparency in match officiating."
Coach's Allegations of Fixing
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan claimed the match was "fixed" in favour of Lionel Messi and Argentina. He said: "A penalty was ruled out and a second incident that should have been checked for a penalty for us was not even checked by the VAR. A second goal was remarkably disallowed. There seems to have been pressure on the Argentinian side on the referee."
Hassan added: "Life is unfair. The world is unfair. OK, but why isn't there any fairness in sports?"
