Malik Tillman's Bloody Sock and Free Kick Rocket US into World Cup History
Malik Tillman's Bloody Sock Free Kick Seals US World Cup Win

Malik Tillman scored a stunning free kick while playing with a torn boot and a blood-stained sock to seal the United States' 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup last 32. The goal, which came after Folarin Balogun was sent off, propelled the US into the last 16 for the first time since 2014.

Tillman, who has been a key playmaker for Mauricio Pochettino, noticed discomfort with his right boot during the second half after an opponent's stomp ripped the top. During a hydration break, equipment manager Kyle Robertson sprinted to the locker room for a fresh pair. Tillman swapped only the right boot, keeping his blood-stained sock underneath.

A Free Kick for the Ages

Fifteen minutes later, with the US down a man, they won a free kick just outside the box. After consulting with Antonee Robinson, Tillman curled a magnificent shot over the Bosnian wall and under the crossbar, becoming the second USMNT player to score from a direct free kick at a World Cup, after Eric Wynalda in 1994.

"We talked about going under the wall, keeper-side, over the wall. Some guys doubted me, but I practiced this in training," Tillman said. Captain Tim Ream added: "He's been playing so well. Other than Balo's goals, he's been one of our best players."

Tillman's Rise to Prominence

Tillman worked hard to earn his starting spot after being cut from Gregg Berhalter's 2022 World Cup squad. He impressed during the 2023 Gold Cup, converting a penalty in a shootout against Costa Rica. Pochettino said: "Malik is an amazing player, full of talent. I am so happy for him."

The torn boot has been sent to the FIFA museum, and Tillman will keep the match-winning boot as a memento. The US face Belgium in the last 16, with Balogun suspended, making Tillman's set-piece threat crucial.
