Princess Kate 'Mortified' by Dad's Wimbledon Gaffe

Princess Catherine was left 'mortified' by a courtside gaffe made by her father, Michael Middleton, during a past Wimbledon visit, as she recalled in a 2017 BBC documentary. The Princess of Wales, 44, made her first appearance at this year's Wimbledon tournament on day four, surprising fans as she arrived at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. As patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and a devoted tennis enthusiast, Catherine often attends the event, frequently accompanied by her parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, who are also regulars.

Father's Mistake at Wimbledon

In the documentary Our Wimbledon, presented by sports host Sue Barker, Catherine recounted the moment her father tried to play it cool in front of former British number one Tim Henman. According to The Mirror, she said: 'My father is not going to appreciate this, but we were walking past Tim Henman and we had just seen [Pete] Sampras play. My dad said very coolly: Hi Pete. I was mortified!' The gaffe occurred when Michael Middleton mistakenly addressed Henman as the American tennis legend Pete Sampras.

Catherine's Wimbledon Tradition

Catherine typically attends Wimbledon with her husband, Prince William, and their two oldest children, Prince George, 12, and Princess Charlotte, 11. Their youngest son, Prince Louis, now eight, is also expected to start attending the event this summer. The family's presence at the tournament underscores their shared love for tennis, a sport that Catherine has supported since childhood.
