Keane Sympathises with Mbappe Over Penalty Delay Controversy

Roy Keane has voiced strong support for Kylian Mbappe after the France star was left fuming by a lengthy delay before his penalty miss in the World Cup quarter-final against Morocco. The incident occurred when Mbappe was fouled by Manchester United's Noussair Mazraoui, earning a spot-kick that was not taken for three minutes and ten seconds. Keane, speaking as an ITV pundit at half-time, called the delay 'unfair' and argued that it gave Morocco an advantage.

Keane Criticises Lengthy Wait

Keane did not hold back in his criticism of the delay, stating: 'It is unfair, it's a pressure situation, why does he have to wait for over three minutes? It's unfair, even for these world-class players. Time is the enemy for the striker, it almost gives the advantage back to the goalkeeper and the team who conceded the penalty, it's not right.' The delay was attributed to a protracted VAR review, despite the foul appearing straightforward to many observers.

Mbappe, who plays for Real Madrid, had to return to the spot multiple times to reposition the ball before finally taking his run-up. His eventual effort was weak and easily saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. The forward reacted with visible anger, throwing his arms up and shouting in the referee's direction. During the subsequent drinks break, Mbappe confronted the official to voice his grievances.

McCoist Criticises Mbappe's Technique

ITV commentator Ally McCoist described the holdup as 'absolute nonsense' but placed the blame on Mbappe's execution. 'You might be far from happy, but don't do this, run up with a stutter and then hit it softly right to the keeper. Run up with a bit of purpose. There's no power in it, no aggression, no belief, which is incredible for a man of that talent,' McCoist said.

Controversy Over Refereeing Panel

French supporters were already angry before the match after FIFA appointed an all-Argentine officiating panel led by Facundo Tello for the fixture. This marked the first time in the tournament that an entire refereeing team had come from the same country. The decision fuelled conspiracy theories, especially after concerns were raised about Argentina's victory against Egypt in a previous match.

FIFA found itself accused of favouritism towards Lionel Messi's nation. In response, FIFA Chief Refereeing Officer Pierluigi Collina defended the officials, insisting that 'nobody can question the integrity' of the refereeing team and asserting that World Cup referees are 'not influenced by anyone'.
