George Russell Keeps Austrian GP Pole After Verstappen Crash

George Russell secured pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix, but the result sparked immediate confusion and an investigation after Max Verstappen's high-speed crash during the final flying laps. Russell's lap time stood, placing him ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, despite the incident that brought out yellow flags.

Verstappen's Crash Triggers Yellow Flags

Max Verstappen lost control of his Red Bull while pushing for pole, the rear stepping out at high speed. The Dutchman slid off track, skipped through the gravel, and hit the barrier, prompting yellow flags in that mini-sector. At the time, Leclerc held the fastest time, with Hamilton second. Russell and his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli were still on track completing their final laps.

Russell's Lap Under Investigation

Antonelli, ahead of Russell, backed off after seeing double-waved yellow flags on his dash, confirmed by onboard footage. Russell, however, insisted he saw only single-waved flags, also backed by his car's footage. Double-waved yellows automatically delete lap times, while single-waved laps are kept. Russell lifted off the throttle in the mini-sector but still managed to top the timesheets.

The stewards placed Russell under investigation but quickly cleared him, satisfied that he had lifted enough. The FIA initially stated Russell had a lap deleted, but later clarified it was his in-lap, along with Antonelli and several others. Consequently, Russell's final flying lap stood, securing pole.

Grid Positions and Reaction

Leclerc will start second, with Hamilton third. Ferrari would have locked out the front row had Russell's time been deleted. The chaotic qualifying session left fans and teams debating the consistency of yellow flag enforcement.
