England's first game of the World Cup is edging closer, with Thomas Tuchel set for some big decisions. The Three Lions will begin their campaign against Croatia in what is a repeat of the 2018 World Cup semi-final between the two teams.
John Stones, Harry Kane and Jordan Pickford all started for England that night, and it's expected they'll be in the line-up for Wednesday's clash against Croatia. Marcus Rashford was also in the starting XI, but his spot in the England team is less certain, with suggestions Tuchel could go for Anthony Gordon instead.
Gordon Impresses in Warm-Up
Gordon impressed for England during their final warm-up match against Costa Rica, with the recent Barcelona signing netting from the penalty spot in the friendly. He'd struggled at times in England's previous warm-up clash against New Zealand, but that might've been down to a lack of game time, with Gordon's last outing having come in early April.
By contrast, Rashford has been a regular for Barcelona - albeit at times off the bench - and was being touted for the starting left-wing spot. However, as per the Daily Mail, Gordon is set to play Wednesday's clash against Croatia from the start.
Saka Fitness Concern
Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the attack, Tuchel might be left fretting about the fitness of Bukayo Saka. The winger arrived at camp with a slight niggle and is being assessed ahead of the opening group match against Croatia. Noni Madueke is on hand to deputise if necessary, with the ex-Chelsea ace having done so for Arsenal this season. But Saka is usually one of the first names on the team sheet for England and any absence would represent a big blow for the Three Lions.
Midfield and Defence Decisions
Elsewhere, the other big calls include who will play as the attacking midfielder and which centre-backs Tuchel will pick in defence. Jude Bellingham appears to have won the early battle to become England's starting No.10, with the Real Madrid maestro said to be fancied ahead of Morgan Rogers. Meanwhile, eyebrows were raised when news dropped that Stones and Ezri Konsa are the most likely centre-back duo for the opening match. It would mean Marc Guehi is left on the bench, despite the ex-Crystal Palace skipper having impressed following his transfer to Manchester City.
Following the Croatia contest, England face Ghana and Panama in their World Cup group. For the first time, the knockout stages will begin from the round-of-32 stage.
