Uruguay have been eliminated from the World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Spain, a result that caps a dreadful tournament marred by internal strife, individual mistakes, and a toxic atmosphere. Marcelo Bielsa, the 70-year-old head coach, takes much of the blame as his side depart in a storm of spite and ill-discipline.
Individual Errors Prove Costly
Uruguay conceded four goals in the tournament, all stemming from basic errors. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera spilled a header against Saudi Arabia, the defensive wall parted for a free-kick against Cape Verde, and a misplaced pass when Muslera was 10 yards outside his box cost them an equaliser. Against Spain, Muslera let a tame shot squirm inside his post, a moment that symbolised Uruguay’s campaign. He was withdrawn at half-time for Sergio Rochet, but the damage was done.
Squad Unrest and Managerial Tensions
Before the Spain game, four senior players—Rochet, Manuel Ugarte, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Federico Valverde—requested a meeting with Bielsa to complain about training intensity, which they said caused injuries. They also suggested a change in tactics, playing a low block and countering, but Bielsa refused. Instead, he called a 48-minute team meeting, accusing the squad of trying to oust him after Luis Suárez’s retirement and after he left Nahitan Nández out of the squad.
Several players walked out during the meeting, despite attempts by defender José María Giménez to keep them in. Ronald Araújo, who did not play in the first two games, said: “God willing we advance from the group, but this can’t be endured any longer.”
Bielsa’s World Cup Record Under Scrutiny
Bielsa’s World Cup record is poor: Argentina went out in the group stage in 2002, Chile reached the last 16 in 2010, and now Uruguay have failed to beat Saudi Arabia or Cape Verde. His legacy as a brilliant, influential coach is secure, but this tournament may be his last at a World Cup. Uruguay’s squad lacks the quality of previous generations, with no Luis Suárez, Diego Forlán, or Edinson Cavani, and the Under-20 World Cup winners from three years ago have not graduated to the senior team.
Bielsa’s decision to recall Muslera, who had lost his place to Rochet before 2022 and retired from international football in 2024, was a terrible mistake. Rochet had kept three clean sheets before being dropped. The tournament ended disgracefully with Agustín Canobbio’s red card for a foul on Pau Cubarsí, capping a campaign of frustration and acrimony.
