Day nine of Wimbledon brings quarter-final action, with Novak Djokovic in an unusual underdog position and one fourth-round match still to be completed after the tournament's first 11pm curfew on Centre Court.
Djokovic's Unusual Underdog Status
It is rare for Novak Djokovic to be considered an underdog at Wimbledon, especially when not facing world No. 1 Jannik Sinner or two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz, who is absent due to injury. Yet the seventh-seeded Serb finds himself in that position ahead of his quarter-final against third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Auger-Aliassime has dropped only two sets across four matches, both in a hard-fought win over recent Mallorca champion Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Canadian has reached a Wimbledon quarter-final only once before, in 2021, when he lost to Matteo Berrettini. Berrettini then lost to Djokovic in the final as the Serb claimed his seventh of eight Wimbledon titles. Djokovic is seeking a ninth title and a career 25th Grand Slam, but faces a confident, younger, and fresher opponent in Auger-Aliassime, with reigning champion Sinner potentially awaiting in the semi-finals.
Zverev-Lehecka Match to Resume
French Open champion Alexander Zverev and Jiri Lehecka must resume their fourth-round tie after being taken off court late last night. Zverev leads by two sets, with the pair tied 3-3 in the third. The 29-year-old German has never advanced past the fourth round at Wimbledon in nine previous attempts, but recently ended his long wait for a first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.
All-American Showdown: Pegula vs. Gauff
For the first time, world No. 4 Jessica Pegula and world No. 7 Coco Gauff meet at Wimbledon. This is their ninth head-to-head meeting and sixth at the quarter-final stage or later, but they have never faced each other at a Grand Slam, only at the WTA Finals. Pegula is still searching for her first major and has never reached the semi-finals of a Slam. Gauff, a two-time major champion, has also never reached the final four at Wimbledon. One of their waits will end today.
The pair are known to be good friends off court and frequent doubles partners. Gauff said two years ago: "It doesn't feel as much as people make it out to be. Playing her is difficult, but I don't think me being friends with her makes it more difficult. I want to win regardless who is on the other side of the court."
