Welsh Rugby Star Louis Rees-Zammit Shocks Fans with NFL Move to Jacksonville Jaguars
Welsh rugby star Rees-Zammit signs with NFL's Jaguars

In a stunning turn of events, Welsh rugby union star Louis Rees-Zammit has announced his departure from the sport to pursue a career in American football with the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars.

The 22-year-old winger, considered one of Wales' most exciting talents, revealed his shock decision just days before Wales' Six Nations opener against Scotland. Rees-Zammit will immediately begin training with the Jaguars through the NFL's International Player Pathway program.

A meteoric rise cut short

Rees-Zammit's rugby career has been nothing short of spectacular since his debut for Gloucester in 2019. The lightning-fast wing scored 14 tries in 31 appearances for Wales and was instrumental in their 2021 Six Nations championship victory.

"This is an incredible opportunity for me to fulfill another professional sporting ambition by playing in the NFL," Rees-Zammit said in a statement. "I've had the incredible honor of playing rugby for my country, but I believe this is the right time for me to realize another professional goal."

Wales rugby reacts

Wales defence coach Steve Tandy expressed surprise at the timing but support for Rees-Zammit's decision: "It's come as a bit of a shock to everybody. He's a quality player and person, and we wish him all the best."

The move makes Rees-Zammit the highest-profile rugby player to transition to the NFL since Australian Jordan Mailata, who now stars for the Philadelphia Eagles.

What this means for the Jaguars

Jacksonville gains an elite athlete with proven speed and agility. At 6'3" and 194 pounds, Rees-Zammit could potentially play as a wide receiver or on special teams.

The Jaguars have been active in the international market, having previously signed English rugby player Christian Wade to their practice squad in 2019.

NFL scouts have increasingly looked to rugby for talent, drawn to players' tackling skills, spatial awareness and endurance - qualities that translate well to American football.

Rees-Zammit's departure leaves a significant hole in Wales' backline as they prepare for the Six Nations championship without one of their most dangerous attacking threats.
