The Active Sunderland BIG Bike Ride made its return to the city on Sunday, July 12, 2026, drawing cyclists of all ages and abilities. Organized by Sunderland City Council, the event offered participants a choice of four routes: a family-friendly five-mile ride, or more challenging 12-mile, 20-mile, and 38-mile options.

Event Details and Route

Cyclists set off from the Beacon of Light, adjacent to the Stadium of Light, at 9am. The routes took riders through a mix of city roads and woodland paths along the River Wear before reaching the finish line. The event was started by the Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Robert Hutchinson.

Support and Safety

Participants were supported with clearly signed routes, marshals, first aid cover, bike mechanics, and pick-up vehicles to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. The event featured 17 pictures capturing the day, including cyclists giving thumbs up and waving as they rode over bridges.
