Munster prop Conor Bartley learned he was leaving the Irish province in an unusual and public manner: during an end-of-season awards ceremony on June 12 in Limerick. The 30-year-old was called on stage to receive a watch, only to hear his name announced as a departing player by a teammate, according to the Irish Independent.
Bartley, who had been awaiting a decision on his future, was reportedly stunned and left the event shortly after. At the time, Munster stated that no decision had been made about his contract, and the club claimed they did not inform the event organizers of his impending exit. An official Munster departure event the previous week had not included Bartley because his exit was not yet confirmed.
Contract Uncertainty and Season Performance
Since the awards night, Bartley has been informed by Munster that he will not be retained, though the club has not publicly announced this. Bartley had signed his first senior contract with Munster last season at age 29, after a decade in the All-Ireland League with Young Munster. He was brought in during an injury crisis and made six appearances off the bench this season, including a Champions Cup debut against Gloucester, earning praise from coaches.
Munster's Squad Changes
Munster's prop situation has been in flux following the retirements of Oli Jager and John Ryan, leading to a careful evaluation of Bartley's future. This is not the only disruption to Munster's plans: the club initially hired Roger Randle as attack coach, but the move was canceled after backlash over historic rape allegations that Randle denies. Instead, Munster appointed former Ireland centre Jared Payne from the Scarlets.
