Micah Richards Criticizes Thomas Tuchel's World Cup Squad Selections
Richards Slams Tuchel's England World Cup Squad Choices

Former England full-back Micah Richards has criticized Thomas Tuchel's squad selection for the upcoming World Cup, pointing out three key mistakes. Richards believes Tuchel erred by leaving out either Cole Palmer or Phil Foden, while also suggesting that Harry Maguire and Trent Alexander-Arnold should have been included. All four players were surprising absentees from the tournament in North America.

Tuchel's Controversial Choices

In their place, Tuchel has opted for players like Jordan Henderson, Dan Burn, and Djed Spence, who are eager to contribute when England begins their campaign against Croatia on Wednesday night. Richards, speaking on BBC Sport, acknowledged Tuchel's tactical acumen but disagreed with the squad composition.

Richards' Analysis

Presenter Gabby Logan raised the topic, noting Tuchel's emphasis on building culture and his exclusion of talented players. Richards responded: "I agree with him as a coach tactically, but I don't agree with the squad. I would have included at least Foden or Palmer because in tournaments, you need moments of magic. Cole Palmer can produce that anytime. Maguire is tried and trusted, and I'd have taken Trent too."

Richards added that Tuchel seems to prefer players who won't sulk if not starting: "Henderson, Burn, Spence, Livramento, Toney—they're happy being second fiddle and know their roles. I understand why he did it, but I don't necessarily agree."

Omitted Players' Seasons

Both Palmer and Alexander-Arnold had difficult seasons at Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively, while Maguire was a regular starter for Manchester United when fit. After his omission, Maguire released a statement expressing shock and disappointment: "I was confident I could play a major part this summer. I've been left shocked and gutted."

Tuchel's Ambition

Tuchel aims to become the first manager to lead England to World Cup success in 60 years, and if successful, he would be the first foreign manager to achieve this feat.
