France Flanker Oscar Jegou Faces Disciplinary Action Over Alleged Eye Gouging Incident
French rugby flanker Oscar Jegou has been officially cited and will face a disciplinary hearing following an alleged eye gouging incident during France's Six Nations defeat to Scotland. The incident occurred in the second half of the match at Murrayfield, where television footage appeared to show Jegou making contact near the eye of Scotland's replacement hooker Ewan Ashman during a maul.
Details of the Alleged Foul Play
The citing falls under Law 9.12, which prohibits physical abuse including contact with the eye or eye area. Jegou's hearing is scheduled for 9.30am GMT on Tuesday morning, where a disciplinary committee will review the evidence. The incident happened just before Darcy Graham scored his second try for Scotland in what became a dramatic 50-40 victory for the home side.
Television Match Official Controversy
Former Test referee Nigel Owens expressed surprise that television match official Brett Cronan did not intervene during the match. Owens, speaking on BBC coverage, stated that the footage was "quite clear" and that such incidents should be addressed immediately during games.
"It definitely should have been looked at," Owens said. "Looking at that footage, that player is going to be in a bit of trouble. There are processes in place now to deal with that but it should have been looked at in the game."
Owens emphasized that while the incident didn't affect the outcome of this particular match, in tighter contests such actions could prove decisive. He noted that a Scottish player had alerted the referee to the incident during the match, but was told the citing process would address it afterward.
France's Championship Prospects
Despite the controversy and their grand slam hopes being dashed by the Murrayfield defeat, France still have championship aspirations. They face England on the final weekend of the Six Nations, where a bonus point victory could be enough for Fabien Galthie's side to defend their title.
The disciplinary outcome for Jegou could have implications for France's final match preparations, though the team remains focused on securing what would be a remarkable championship defense despite their recent setback.
