Niall Horan's Nerve-Wracking Experience as Rory McIlroy's Caddie at the Masters
Former One Direction star Niall Horan has opened up about the intense nerves he felt while serving as Rory McIlroy's caddie during the Masters Par Three Contest at Augusta National. The pop sensation, accustomed to performing on global stages, found himself overwhelmed by a different kind of pressure on the golf course.
A Daunting Task for a Superstar
Horan teamed up with the two-time Masters champion more than a decade ago for the traditional nine-hole event, which takes place the day before the main tournament begins. In a recent interview with ESPN, Horan recalled the experience, stating, "It was very nerve-wracking, actually. I didn't think it would be like that—I thought it would just be me carrying a bag, having a laugh with Rory. But there's a lot of people out there on those days."
The singer described the Par Three Contest as "an amazing day" and "nothing like it in sport," emphasizing its special nature for players, families, and guests like himself. However, his anxiety was palpable: "You see there, my hands were literally shaking. I pulled it into the water. It wasn't my best golf, I'm not going to lie!"
Memorable Moments and Viral Slip
During his short stint as a caddie, Horan was at the centre of another unforgettable incident. The 32-year-old slipped over moments before a television interview, with the clip quickly going viral. Despite the embarrassing moment, it did not dampen his spirits. Reflecting on the opportunity, Horan told Sky Sports at the time, "It's just great to be at Augusta. I knew about a year ago I had the time off to come to the Masters. Then I met this man (McIlroy) and he asked me, 'Did I want to carry the bag on Wednesday?' Of course, if the world No 1 asks you to carry his bag, you carry it!"
On playing golf in front of a large crowd, he added, "I can't say I've been that nervous in a long time! It was tough, but it was alright! It's great to be around Rory. It's a big week for him and hopefully come Sunday he'll have a Green Jacket on his back."
McIlroy's Masters Triumph and Legacy
McIlroy's journey to Masters glory was a long one, with the golfer ending his agonising wait for a title in a dramatic play-off victory in 2025. At 36 years old, he celebrated completing his career Grand Slam at Augusta and became a two-time champion this year. After racing into a remarkable six-shot lead at the end of day two, McIlroy saw his rivals catch up as the tournament wore on. However, he clung on to top spot, becoming only the fourth golfer to successfully retain the championship.
His long-time caddie, Harry Diamond, also earned a huge payday from this success. The Par Three Contest has always been a lighter side of McIlroy's personality, held since 1960 as a way for players to settle pre-tournament nerves, often with family members as caddies. In 2015, McIlroy was joined by Horan on the course, allowing the avid golf fan to step up and take a shot during his round.
It would ultimately be another decade before McIlroy earned the coveted Green Jacket, though it was arguably worth the wait. The 36-year-old has since withdrawn from the upcoming RBC Heritage as he takes a break after winning his sixth major title, cementing his status as one of golf's greats.
