A car ploughed into pedestrians in the northern Italian city of Modena on Saturday, injuring eight people, two of them critically, the mayor has confirmed.
Mayor Massimo Mezzetti said no one was killed but two victims were in very serious condition. He added that a woman who was pinned against a shop window may require the amputation of both legs.
The driver, described by witnesses as a man in his 30s, has been detained and is being questioned at police headquarters. Authorities are working to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or if the act was deliberate.
