Storm's Munster Sees Lomax as Bonus Amid Parramatta Court Battle
Munster: Lomax Bonus Amid Parramatta Court Battle

Melbourne Storm superstar Cameron Munster has offered his perspective on the ongoing saga surrounding Zac Lomax, describing the potential signing of the State of Origin ace as merely a bonus addition for the club. This comes amidst a dramatic escalation in the situation, with Parramatta Eels taking legal action to prevent their former winger from joining the Storm this season.

Legal Battle Unfolds in NSW Supreme Court

In a significant development, Parramatta have initiated proceedings in the New South Wales Supreme Court to stop Lomax from playing for Melbourne. The 26-year-old was originally granted a release from his four-year contract at the end of last season to pursue opportunities in the new rugby union competition R360. However, that league has since collapsed, leaving Lomax in a state of legal limbo and sparking this intense courtroom confrontation.

Munster's Light-Hearted Take on the Situation

Speaking at the Storm's team photo day on Wednesday, Munster initially joked about the media's focus, expressing mock disappointment that no one had inquired about his newly acquired pub in Brisbane, The Milton. 'Pub's going well, thanks for asking,' Munster quipped, before addressing the Lomax speculation more seriously.

'I leave that (Lomax discussions) up to the coaching staff and the owners,' Munster stated. 'That's above my pay grade. He's a great asset to the club if we get him. But there's been a whole bit of publicity around it, and we're very confident, very comfortable with our squad at the moment.'

He elaborated further, noting, 'He'd (Lomax) probably add a nice element to it, but we're not putting all our eggs in one basket, and worried about if we get him or not.' Munster also expressed his eagerness to move past the pre-season, adding, 'Excited to get back out there and get rid of this pre-season. I've had enough.'

Storm's Off-Season Transformation and Key Departures

The Lomax controversy adds another spicy element to what has been a period of significant change for the Melbourne Storm. Following back-to-back grand final defeats, the club has undergone a substantial reshuffle during the off-season. Notably, fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen has retired, while enforcer Nelson Asofa-Solomona has departed to pursue a boxing career.

In further blows to the squad, fellow star Eli Katoa remains sidelined indefinitely after undergoing emergency surgery to treat a brain bleed suffered while playing for Tonga in the Pacific Championships. These absences underscore the challenges facing the Storm as they prepare for the new campaign.

Season Opener and Coaching Speculation

Adding to the drama, Melbourne will open their NRL season by hosting Parramatta at AAMI Park on March 5th, setting the stage for a potentially fiery encounter given the ongoing legal dispute. Meanwhile, Munster has also commented on the coaching landscape, expressing hope that Storm legend Cameron Smith's part-time role with the Brisbane Broncos is only temporary.

Smith, the NRL games record-holder, has taken on a position with the Broncos, who defeated Melbourne in last year's epic grand final. Munster revealed he would be thrilled if Smith eventually returned to succeed Craig Bellamy as coach of the Storm. 'It's disappointing to see him in different colours, but he obviously wants to get a bit of development,' Munster said. 'He feels like there's a different way of coaching, and you never know, he might end up having some development there and come back down (to coach the Storm).'
