Exclusive: UK Hotel That Feels Like Italy, I Didn't Want to Leave
UK Hotel That Feels Like Italy: A Stay to Remember

In the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside, surrounded by picturesque towns and quaint villages, lies The Killingworth Castle. This historic pub, with only eight bedrooms, offers a secluded oasis that feels worlds away from the rolling UK landscape. Its honey-coloured stone buildings and pristine gardens filled with seasonal flowers evoke scenes of Italy, making for a blissful home away from home.

Location and Welcome

Nestled in Wootton, affectionately dubbed 'The Killy', the hotel is perfectly positioned as a gateway to explore the Cotswolds. Just a 30-minute drive from Oxford, it provides access to beautiful spots like Burford, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Bibury. The charming town of Woodstock, home to Blenheim Palace, is also nearby. Run by husband and wife Jim and Claire Alexander, the hotel offers a warm welcome from the moment you arrive, blending farmhouse charm with boutique-hotel comfort.

Bespoke Luxury Rooms

I checked into one of the eight luxurious rooms in the stable block, which felt like a storybook hideaway with exposed beams, brick, and slanted walls. The room featured a grand rustic oak four-poster bed with a quilted throw, a stylish seating area with leather chairs and courtyard views, and a roll-top bath beneath a skylight. Complimentary English sherry awaited on arrival, adding a special touch. Each room is individually designed with handpicked antique furniture, offering a blend of old-world architecture and bespoke luxury.

Gastronomic Delights

The pub's dining is a highlight, under head chef Rob Mason. It has been continuously recommended in the Michelin Guide, awarded three AA Rosettes, and featured in the UK's Top 50 Gastropubs list for 2026. I opted for the tasting menu at £95 per guest, with an optional wine flight for £55. The meal began with treacle bread presented on wheat and barley, followed by Evesham asparagus with gribiche sauce, roasted hand-dived scallop with pork jowl, and wild sea bass Grenobloise. The standout was the Cotswold lamb, braised neck with peas and broad beans. Desserts included vanilla and rhubarb palate cleanser and a chocolate delice with hazelnut. Breakfast was equally exceptional, with eggs Benedict featuring bright orange yolks.

The Charm of 'The Killy'

The hotel's small size ensures a peaceful, personalised experience. Breakfast was served without rush, with a warm welcome from owner Jim and the gentle hum of fellow guests. Rooms start from £169 per night on weekdays and £205 on weekends, including breakfast. For more information or to book, visit The Killingworth Castle website.
