Mike Tindall, the former England rugby captain, has shared a humorous anecdote about receiving a stern telling-off from his mother-in-law, Princess Anne, after he savoured a victory over her beloved Scotland team a little too enthusiastically. The incident highlights the unique and playful dynamic within their royal family relationship.
A Deliberate Delay at Twickenham
Speaking in a recent interview, Tindall recounted a specific match where England triumphed over Scotland at Twickenham Stadium. As captain, he was due to receive the trophy from Princess Anne, who has served as patron of the Scottish Rugby Union since 1986 and is a fervent supporter of the Scottish side.
Tindall admitted to purposely prolonging the moment, shaking hands with every member of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) while keeping the Princess Royal waiting. "I don't like the majority of the RFU," he quipped, "but I shook every one of their hands and I kept her waiting."
"Move On, Michael"
The former Gloucester and Bath player, who earned 75 caps for England, described Princess Anne's clear displeasure at his behaviour. According to Tindall, she urged him to hurry along with the presentation, telling him twice to "Move on, Michael."
He responded with a light-hearted invitation for a debrief over lunch the following day, only to be met with the same firm instruction. "She was like 'Move on, Michael.' I was like 'Debrief over lunch tomorrow?', and she said, 'Move on, Michael,'" Tindall recalled, laughing at the memory.
The Background of a Royal Rivalry
Mike Tindall first met Princess Anne when he began dating her daughter, Zara Phillips. The couple married in 2011 while Tindall was still an active professional rugby player. Throughout his career, he faced Scotland multiple times in the Six Nations Championship, making this particular victory all the more personal.
Princess Anne's long-standing affiliation with Scottish rugby dates back to the 1980s, and she regularly attends their fixtures. This created an awkward yet amusing scenario when her son-in-law led England to a win against her cherished team.
A Playful Family Dynamic
Despite the momentary tension, the exchange underscores the capacity for humour and warmth in their relationship. Tindall views it as a typical male desire to "get something over on their mother-in-law," albeit in a highly niche sporting context.
These days, Tindall is often seen accompanying Zara at various events and has embraced the privileges of royal life. Since retiring from rugby in 2014, he has gained further public recognition through appearances on television shows like I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in 2022.
The story remains a testament to the blending of professional sportsmanship with family ties, offering a rare glimpse into the lighter side of royal interactions.
