Llanybydder Rugby Club has warned it could be forced to fold after 52 years amid a shortage of players, issuing an emotional plea for help to save its future. The west Wales side, which competes in Division 4 West A, is currently bottom of the table after losing all three of its matches this season and has also been deducted points for failing to fulfil a fixture.
Club's emotional plea
In a heartfelt statement, the club said its committee and players were devastated by the prospect of losing an institution which has been part of the community for more than five decades. "To think that our club, with its proud history and so many years of dedication behind it, could come to an end is heartbreaking," the statement read.
"The committee and players are devastated that we have reached this point. This is not a decision we want to face, and the thought of losing something that has meant so much to so many people is incredibly difficult."
More than a rugby team
The club stressed that its importance extends far beyond the rugby pitch, with generations of players, families, supporters and volunteers having helped build its place in the village. "Llanybydder Rugby Club is more than just a rugby team. It is a community, a family and a part of our village's history," the statement continued.
"We are not just fighting to keep a team on the pitch; we are fighting to preserve 52 years of memories, friendships, tradition and community spirit for the next generation."
Appeal for support
The club is now appealing to the local community, former players, past supporters and neighbouring rugby clubs to help find a solution before it is forced to consider closing. It has asked anyone who could help attract new players, offer practical support or share ideas to come forward, while also seeking advice from other clubs which have faced similar difficulties.
"We know times are difficult, and we are not asking for miracles," the statement read. "We are simply asking people to help us explore every possible avenue before we have to consider closing the doors on a club that has stood for 52 years."
Wider grassroots concerns
The appeal comes amid further concerns over the future of grassroots rugby in Wales, with another club recently withdrawing from the Welsh Rugby Union leagues because of difficulties attracting players. Trinant RFC announced its withdrawal from the leagues in August, bringing its participation in the Welsh league structure to a halt after more than a century of history. The club said it hoped to rebuild and potentially return in the future, while also highlighting the challenges facing community rugby.
Llanybydder will now hope its appeal can rally enough support to avoid a similar outcome and give the club a chance to continue. "Imagine the sadness of seeing another village rugby club disappear. Once a club is gone, the history, the traditions and the opportunities it provides for future generations are incredibly difficult to bring back," the statement added.
"Please help us give Llanybydder Rugby Club a fighting chance. We are not ready to say goodbye, and we hope that, with the support of our community and fellow rugby clubs, we may still find a way forward."
