Horse Racing Tips: Jason Heavey's Best Bets for This Week
Jason Heavey's Horse Racing Best Bets This Week

Award-winning horse racing tipster Jason Heavey has released his latest Gold Star column, offering expert selections for the week ahead and beyond. Heavey, the Daily Star Sport's chief tipster, is one of the country's leading newspaper tipsters, having won both the Racing Post Press Challenge and the Racing Post Naps Table in 2023. He currently leads the National Press Challenge table among red-top tipsters.

Recent Successes

Heavey's column previously highlighted Opportunity, who won the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot as a 6-1 shot. Despite James Doyle switching to ride Hopewell Rock, James McDonald steered William Haggas's horse to victory. The handicapper has since raised Opportunity's rating by 10lb to 110, likely ending his handicap career. Royal Ascot proved challenging for punters due to draw bias, though Heavey tipped four winners on the Friday. Last week, Jannas Journey, previously flagged in the column, won at Carlisle at 10-3.

This Week's Selections

Thunder Call – Betway Handicap, Newmarket

The July Meeting at Newmarket starts Thursday, and Heavey fancies Thunder Call in the Betway Handicap. The progressive horse won impressively at York recently.

Romidijo – Nursery, Chepstow (Wednesday)

Romidijo, rated 65, runs in a nursery at Chepstow on Wednesday. His Epsom form from the Woodcote Stakes is the strongest in the race, making him a strong contender.

Catalyse – Carlisle (Thursday)

Catalyse, now with trainer Jim Goldie, has dropped 26lb in the weights since last year and showed decent form last season. He is worth watching at Carlisle on Thursday.

Storm Point – Thursday Evening

Storm Point, a recent winner at Newbury for this column, returns to the track on Thursday evening and should be hard to beat. However, Nakaaah, another Heavey tip who won well eight days ago, poses a formidable challenge.

Three Non Blondes – Newmarket (Friday)

Three Non Blondes ran a solid third on her first start for trainer Hayley Burton and could improve if she takes up her entry at Newmarket on Friday.

Ante-Post Focus: John Smith's Cup

For Saturday's John Smith's Cup at York, Heavey has taken 8-1 on Danger Bay. The Ed Bethell-trained horse won the Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar smoothly, and the Knavesmire track should suit him. Bethell has pattern race aspirations for this four-year-old.

Future Winners

Heavey also highlights three horses to watch:

  • Flying Moonlight: Two decent Flat efforts for Sandy Thomson suggest a win is imminent.
  • Newtown Rambler: Won three consecutive times over fences; a 4lb rise may not prevent another victory.
  • Flying Frontier: Stayed on well at Sandown last weekend and should go close next time.
