Melbourne Storm Star Jahrome Hughes Rules Himself Out of Queensland Origin Selection
Melbourne Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes has definitively ruled himself out of contention for Queensland selection in the State of Origin series, stating he would lack the necessary passion to wear the Maroons jersey. The 31-year-old playmaker made this candid declaration following recent changes to the Origin eligibility criteria implemented by the NRL.
Hughes Cites Passion for New Zealand Over Queensland
Speculation had been mounting that Hughes would be a natural fit for the Queensland team to face New South Wales if he were eligible under the new rules. However, Hughes has confirmed he will not participate in Australia's most popular sporting event, regardless of his eligibility status.
'I'm not going to play Origin. It doesn't matter if I'm eligible or not,' Hughes revealed on the OneSixSeven Podcast, which he co-hosts with Melbourne Storm teammates Cameron Munster and Ryan Papenhuyzen.
'I feel like Origin is such a good game or spectacle because they're so proud,' Hughes explained. 'Like you look at Mun (Munster), you know he's a proud Queenslander, like he would die for that jersey. If I put a Queensland jersey on, I just wouldn't have that same passion as if I put on a Kiwis Maori jersey, even a Storm jersey.'
Hughes Commits to New Zealand and Rugby League World Cup
The veteran halfback will continue representing New Zealand internationally and is expected to play a pivotal role in their campaign at the upcoming Rugby League World Cup later this year. Hughes' commitment to the Kiwis remains unwavering despite the eligibility changes that could have opened the door for Queensland selection.
In a significant development for New Zealand's World Cup prospects, Queensland star Kalyn Ponga has also become eligible to represent the Kiwis. The Newcastle Knights fullback had previously committed to Queensland over New Zealand back in 2018, believing he would never wear the black and white jersey. However, Ponga is now emerging as a strong contender for selection in the New Zealand squad later this year.
Timing Ahead of NRL Season Opener in Las Vegas
Hughes' announcement comes just weeks before the 2026 NRL season commences with a historic opening in Las Vegas. The Newcastle Knights, featuring Kalyn Ponga, are scheduled to face the North Queensland Cowboys at Allegiant Stadium to kick off the season.
The Melbourne Storm star's decision highlights the complex personal and national allegiances within professional rugby league, particularly as eligibility rules evolve. While some players embrace the opportunity to represent multiple teams, Hughes has drawn a clear line based on his personal passion and identity.
