In a significant shift for sports broadcasting in the United Kingdom, ITV has announced that its coverage of the 2026 Six Nations rugby tournament will incorporate in-play advertising for the very first time. This marks a major departure from traditional commercial breaks and represents a new approach to funding premium sports content.
A New Era for Rugby Broadcasting
The broadcaster plans to implement a novel system where a 20-second advertisement will be shown once per half, specifically timed to coincide with the setting of a scrum. During these brief commercial interludes, the left-hand side of the screen will continue to display the live action from the pitch, while the right-hand side will carry the television commercial.
Precedents and Programming Strategy
This innovative method is not entirely untested within ITV's portfolio. The decision follows similar approaches employed in some of the channel's racing coverage and certain broadcasts on Irish channel RTE. The introduction of in-play advertising arrives at the beginning of a monumental year for ITV across multiple sports disciplines, particularly rugby and football.
As part of a renewed joint broadcasting agreement with the Six Nations organisers, ITV will showcase ten games from the 2026 men's tournament, compared to the BBC's five. This arrangement precedes the broadcasters' shared United Kingdom rights for the upcoming Fifa World Cup in the summer. It is currently understood that there are no confirmed plans to implement in-play adverts during the football tournament coverage.
Expanding Rugby Portfolio
Beyond the Six Nations, ITV has further solidified its position as a premier destination for rugby union. The channel has been confirmed as the home of the new Nations Championship, which launches in July. Additionally, ITV is set to broadcast every England men's international match leading up to the 2027 Rugby World Cup, cementing its commitment to the sport.
Tournament Schedule and Adjustments
The 2026 Six Nations will commence with a historic first: a Thursday night fixture. France will host Ireland in Paris for the tournament opener, a match that was moved from its traditional Friday night slot. This schedule adjustment was made to avoid a direct clash with the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, ensuring maximum viewership for both prestigious events.
In terms of specific broadcast allocations, ITV will also feature England's highly anticipated encounter with Wales at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham. Meanwhile, the BBC will cover Scotland's away trip to Italy, maintaining the shared broadcasting model that has characterised the tournament's UK coverage for years.
This strategic move towards in-play advertising reflects broader industry trends seeking to balance commercial revenue with viewer experience. By integrating advertisements during natural pauses in play, ITV aims to minimise disruption while creating new monetisation opportunities for one of rugby's most cherished annual competitions.
