Hull Kingston Rovers have officially announced that head coach Willie Peters will depart the club at the conclusion of the current season. The Australian tactician, who masterminded an unprecedented period of success for the rugby league side, is set to return to the southern hemisphere to take up a new challenge.
A Legacy of Unprecedented Achievement
Willie Peters leaves behind a remarkable legacy at Hull KR, having guided the team to what many are calling the most successful era in the club's history. Under his leadership, Rovers secured a historic domestic treble in 2025, capturing multiple trophies in a single campaign for the first time. The crowning glory came in February of this year when Peters led his squad to victory in the prestigious World Club Challenge, defeating Brisbane in a memorable encounter that cemented their status as world champions.
Moving On to New Horizons
The 47-year-old coach confirmed his intention to pursue opportunities in the National Rugby League, with reports indicating he will take charge of the newly formed PNG Chiefs franchise. The Chiefs are scheduled to join the NRL competition in 2028, presenting Peters with a fresh challenge at the highest level of club rugby league.
In an emotional statement, Peters expressed his gratitude to everyone associated with Hull KR: "I've made no secret of my desire to coach in the NRL as the next step of my career. However, it makes this decision no less difficult. I want to thank the board, the players and all at the staff at Sewell Group Craven Park for their support and commitment during four wonderful years where I have developed as a coach and as a person."
"I'd also like to thank the best fans in the world for taking me and my family in since our arrival. Hull KR and the East Hull community will forever be in our hearts. The job is not done, I am fully committed to what's ahead, which continues this week in preparing the players for the Hull derby this Friday. Our goal is always to make our community proud and we aim to do that each and every week."
Mixed Start to the Current Campaign
Despite their World Club Challenge triumph, Hull KR have experienced a challenging beginning to the current season. However, the team demonstrated their championship pedigree with a commanding 52-10 victory over St Helens last Friday, suggesting Peters' influence remains strong as he prepares for his final months in charge.
Owner's Tribute to Departing Coach
Club owner Neil Hudgell paid tribute to Peters' contributions, stating: "As the coach of the world club champions, he deserves to go out on his terms, with our respect, appreciation and best wishes. Willie Peters led us to the most successful season in the history of Hull rugby league in 2025. For now, and for the rest of this year, he will continue to drive a culture that demands success."
Peters' departure marks the end of a transformative four-year period for Hull KR, during which the club has risen to become one of rugby league's most formidable forces. His final challenge will be to maintain their competitive edge throughout the remainder of the season before handing over the reins to his successor.
