Former WRU national performance manager Gethin Watts has announced he is leaving Bristol Bears after seven years at the Gallagher Premiership club.
Watts, who has served as Bristol's head of recruitment since 2023 after previously overseeing the club's academy, confirmed the news in a post on LinkedIn, describing the decision as "difficult".
Potential return to Welsh rugby
It is unclear what his next step is, but many in Wales believe he is someone whose skills should be utilised within Welsh rugby. He was among the potential candidates for the role of WRU technical director, which eventually went to Rhys Long.
"After nearly eight seasons with Bristol Bears, I've made the difficult decision to move on and begin a new chapter," he wrote. "When I arrived at the club, I could never have imagined the impact Bristol would have on me, both professionally and personally."
Career in Welsh rugby
Watts initially joined Bristol as senior academy manager in 2019 before being promoted to head of recruitment, helping shape the club's player pathway and recruitment strategy.
Before moving to Ashton Gate, the Welshman enjoyed a distinguished career in Welsh rugby. He was academy manager at the Ospreys before becoming performance development manager at Cardiff Blues, later taking on the role of national performance manager with the Welsh Rugby Union between 2011 and 2017.
During his time with the WRU, Watts played a key role in overseeing the national academy programme, helping develop many of the players who would go on to represent Wales at senior level.
Farewell message
In his farewell message, Watts thanked the club's owners, staff and supporters. "To the Lansdown family and Booy family, the board, Pat, the coaches, players, staff and supporters, thank you for your trust, support and friendship. It has been a privilege to play a part in this special club's journey."
Although he has yet to announce his next destination, Watts said he is "excited about what comes next" while remaining committed to Bristol during his notice period.
His departure is likely to attract interest from across the game, particularly in Wales, where his extensive experience in elite player development and recruitment could make him an attractive candidate as the WRU continues its renewed focus on producing homegrown talent.
