BBC Sport presenter Gabby Logan has humorously told her husband, former Scotland rugby star Kenny Logan, "don't bother" after he revealed his Valentine's Day plans that don't include her. The couple, who have been married since 2001, will be spending the romantic holiday apart due to sporting commitments.
Valentine's Day Plans Revealed on Podcast
During a recent appearance on the Sports Agents podcast, Kenny Logan disclosed that while Gabby would be in Wales, he would be at Murrayfield in Edinburgh watching the Calcutta Cup match between England and Scotland in the Six Nations tournament. The 53-year-old former rugby international, who earned 70 caps for Scotland, explained his sporting priorities for the day.
A Romantic Gesture Falls Flat
Kenny attempted to soften the blow by suggesting he would leave "50 red roses" for Gabby before departing for Scotland. However, he then joked about opting for a more eco-friendly alternative, telling his wife: "To be honest, I was just saying today on 5 Live, fake plants are the new thing. They're really good because they last so long. So, I'm going to get some fake flowers for you."
Gabby's response was immediate and unimpressed: "Fake flowers? Don't bother!" The 52-year-old presenter did reveal she had made her own arrangements for the day, telling Kenny: "I was about to say, it's okay. There's a good trade this weekend, because I get a young man who really does care about me home for the weekend – because Reuben's got a week off. So, he's back for Valentine's Day. I'll be looked after!"
A Family Steeped in Sporting Tradition
The Logans' relationship has always been intertwined with sports. The couple first met in a bar in 1999, though Kenny initially mistook Gabby for The Big Breakfast host Gaby Roslin. They married two years later and now have 19-year-old twins, Reuben and Lois.
Reuben has followed in his father's footsteps, representing Scotland and playing for Sale Sharks, while Lois pursues showjumping. Gabby comes from a sporting family herself – her father Terry Yorath made over 140 appearances for Leeds United and managed several clubs including Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City.
Sport as Family Love Language
Gabby has often spoken about how central sport has been to her family life. She shared: "I always say sport was our family love language because it's what we all did. All my siblings, we all did sport, my dad's job was sport, and my mum was the original 'soccer mom' in the sense of she was driving us around sport."
She added: "As much as she tried to encourage us to do everything, do drama, play musical instruments, we'd all do it to grade one and then go back to sport. It was just running around the garden competing against each other."
Kenny's Calcutta Cup History
Kenny's decision to spend Valentine's Day at Murrayfield holds personal significance. During his playing career, he featured in eight Calcutta Cup matches but never experienced victory. He recalled one particularly heartbreaking moment: "We were playing England at Murrayfield and were winning 11-9. There was a minute to go and the referee sees a hand going through the ruck pulling the ball back. He gives a penalty straight to England, England kicks the goal, as the goal was coming in, it was one of those where the ball's coming over and you just go, 'Ah'."
Despite their separate Valentine's Day plans, the Logans' playful banter on the podcast demonstrates the strong, sport-centered bond that has sustained their relationship for over two decades. While Kenny watches rugby at Murrayfield, Gabby will be enjoying time with their son Reuben, proving that for this sporting family, love and competition often go hand in hand.
