Opta Supercomputer Premier League Predictions Completely Wrong
Opta Supercomputer Predictions Way Off for Premier League

Football fans have called out Opta's supercomputer as its predictions for the Premier League table appear to be wrong in almost every position. The predictive AI model, which determines match result probabilities and end-of-season standings, has become increasingly popular in recent years.

Predicted vs. Actual Standings

Back in the summer, the supercomputer unveiled its estimations for how the top flight would look at the end of the campaign. However, heading into the final day this Sunday, the model has proven wildly inaccurate, with a strong chance that no team will finish in its predicted position.

The supercomputer had Liverpool as champions, with Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle making up the top five. At the bottom, it backed Burnley, Leeds, and Sunderland for relegation. In reality, none of these teams occupy their forecasted spots.

The current top five are Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Liverpool, while West Ham are extremely likely to join Burnley and Wolves in being relegated. Wolves have just 19 points, Burnley are two points better off, and West Ham are on 36 points.

Key Discrepancies

In the predicted table, Sunderland were expected to finish last with 31.35 points, Leeds 19th with 36.72, and Burnley 18th with 36.94. In reality, Leeds are 14th on 47 points, Sunderland ninth on 51, and Burnley have only 21 points. Wolves and West Ham currently occupy 20th and 18th respectively, despite being predicted for 17th and 16th.

At the top, Liverpool were expected to win the league with around 73.33 points, followed by Arsenal on 71.77 and Manchester City on 70.12. However, Arsenal are in prime position to win their first title since 2004, sitting on 79 points with two games to play, while Liverpool have taken just 59 points in a turbulent campaign.

The biggest underperformers compared to predictions are Chelsea (six places lower), Newcastle (six places lower), Crystal Palace (eight places lower), and Nottingham Forest (six places lower). They currently occupy 10th, 11th, 15th, and 16th respectively, despite being predicted for fourth, fifth, seventh, and 10th.

Conversely, the teams that have overperformed most are Manchester United (nine places higher), Sunderland (11 places higher), Leeds (five places higher), and Bournemouth and Brentford (both three places higher). Those teams were predicted for 12th, 20th, 19th, ninth, and 11th respectively.

Reactions and Context

Sunderland's official account replied to the original predicted table post from last August on X, adding a thinking emoji after their 3-1 win at Everton. It must be noted that Arsenal, Burnley, Bournemouth, Manchester City, Tottenham, and Chelsea have a game in hand on the other 14 teams. This means those fixtures, coupled with the final day encounters, could still result in some predicted positions coming true, particularly as there are currently just three points between 13th and eighth place.
