Sir Nick Faldo, a legendary three-time Masters champion, has issued a compelling challenge to Rory McIlroy as the Northern Irishman prepares to defend his Masters title. Faldo, who is one of only three golfers—alongside Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods—to have successfully defended a Masters crown, believes McIlroy must completely reset his approach and could now set his sights on an even more ambitious goal: winning a second career grand slam.
McIlroy's Historic Achievement and New Ambitions
McIlroy's dramatic play-off victory over Justin Rose last year secured him the coveted green jacket, making him only the sixth player in history to win all four major championships. This monumental achievement capped a long-awaited quest for Masters glory, but as McIlroy tees off in the first round, Faldo argues that he must aim higher to sustain his success.
The Challenge of Defending a Title
Faldo emphasised the immense difficulty of winning back-to-back Masters titles, noting that it requires peak performance in every aspect of the game. "You’ve obviously got to gear up and get everything right: physically, technically, mentally, emotionally it has got to be good that week and off you go again," he explained. However, he admitted there is no simple formula for such a feat, stating, "I have no real answer how it’s done. You can’t roll off a log and do that again."
He further elaborated that McIlroy's emotional win last year means he must start afresh. "He won on such emotion last year it’s going be starting again. There’s no way you can pick up from a year ago," Faldo said. "It’s got to be treated as a whole new goal, a whole new project, starting on Thursday morning. Get out on the golf course and off you go and get into it. Simple as that."
Aiming for Greater Heights
If McIlroy were to triumph again at Augusta, it would bring his major victory tally to six, matching Faldo's own record. Yet, the Englishman is not concerned about being surpassed; instead, he encourages McIlroy to strive for even greater accomplishments. "Hey, I’m not worried about that. I’m just delighted to be part of, you know, Seve (Ballesteros), Rory and I, that world on the European Tour," Faldo remarked.
He speculated that McIlroy might be contemplating his next objectives after the Ryder Cup, suggesting, "He’s probably been thinking about that a bit after the Ryder Cup. You think, ‘Right, what’s the next goal? Get ready for Augusta’." Faldo then proposed a bold new target: "This new goal might be trying to be a two-time grand slam champion. That is pretty darned impressive, isn’t it?"
