England secured a historic 125-run victory over India in the third men's T20 international at Trent Bridge on Tuesday, inflicting India's heaviest defeat in the format. Chasing 202 for victory, India were bowled out for just 76 in 11.2 overs, with Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue leading the charge.
England Post 201-7 After Phil Salt's Blitz
Electing to field first, India's decision seemed justified early on as Jos Buttler fell for 36 and Harry Brook for 16, leaving England at 71-2. However, Phil Salt counterattacked with a blistering 70 off 42 balls, including four sixes, steering England past 150. Sam Curran's late cameo of 41 not out off 24 balls helped England reach 201-7. Axar Patel was the pick of India's bowlers with 2-35, while Prince Yadav took 2-44.
India's Chase Collapses Under Archer and Tongue
India's reply began disastrously as Josh Tongue removed Abhishek Sharma (10) in the second over. Jofra Archer then struck twice in his first spell, dismissing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (13) and Shreyas Iyer (5) to leave India reeling at 41-4. Archer finished with figures of 3-13 from his four overs. Tongue matched him with 4-28, including the key wickets of Ishan Kishan (13) and Shivam Dube (2).
Adil Rashid Seals the Win
Adil Rashid wrapped up the innings by bowling Varun Chakravarthy, confirming England's victory. The win gives England a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Jofra Archer was named Player of the Match, saying: "I'm just happy to contribute to the team. It's a lot of holding your nerve against world-class batters and you just have to keep hitting your spot."
India's Heaviest T20I Defeat
The 125-run margin is India's largest in T20I cricket, surpassing their previous record of a 90-run loss to Australia in 2019. India captain Shreyas Iyer admitted: "It was atrocious. Losing by such a big margin is definitely not acceptable. We need to accept this loss and go back to the drawing board."
England's Tactical Masterclass
England captain Harry Brook praised his team's execution: "I thought the communication and plans going into the second half of the game were perfect. We adapted really well with the bat and knew it was a tricky surface if they hit the top of the stumps and to carry that over into our bowling performance was awesome."
The fourth T20I will be played at the same venue on Thursday, with England looking to seal the series and India desperate to bounce back.
