Kayla Vesia, wife of Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Alex Vesia, has described the team's opening day as 'very bittersweet' following the death of their newborn daughter last year. The couple's daughter, Sterling Sol, died days after her birth in October.
Writing on Instagram, Kayla shared a photo from Dodger Stadium and said: 'What I would give to have my Sterling girl here, carrying her in my heart always.' Her husband commented with three red heart emojis, saying 'I LOVE YOU SOOO MUCH!!'
Alex Vesia also posted on social media after the Dodgers' 8-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, writing: 'Same goals… different perspectives… new motivations. Thankful for everyone who has stuck by me. I'm going to make you proud SSV.' He included a photograph of himself walking off the field pointing to the sky.
The couple, married since 2024, announced they were expecting their first child in April 2025. Following their loss, the Dodgers organisation released a statement saying Alex was away from the team to navigate a 'deeply personal family matter'.
Kayla took a break from social media and returned in January with an emotional video on TikTok. She said: 'I wasn't prepared for not taking my baby home,' adding that she and Alex are 'just trying to get through it every day.' She thanked fans for their support.
Thursday's game was Alex Vesia's first regular-season match since his return to the team. He watched from the bullpen as his teammates secured the win.
