Chelsea Accuse Maresca of Disloyalty in Official Statement

Chelsea have released a bombshell statement slamming Enzo Maresca just minutes after he was announced as the new Manchester City manager. The Italian's move to replace Pep Guardiola was confirmed on Monday, nearly seven months after he left Stamford Bridge.

In a lengthy club statement, Chelsea accused Maresca of disloyalty, revealing that he had informed the club in autumn 2025 that there might be an opportunity to succeed Guardiola. The club stated it became clear that Maresca was 'fully committed to pursuing the opportunity, despite the fact he was under a long-term contract which he had no right to terminate.'

Resignation and Compensation Details

Maresca abruptly resigned in December 2025, leaving Chelsea with no choice but to accept his resignation mid-season. The club said: 'No club wants to change its head coach midway through a season. However, in light of his decision not to continue fulfilling his responsibilities through to the end of the season, the Club was left with no choice but to protect our players, our supporters, and the Badge and accept his resignation.'

Chelsea also revealed that a confidential settlement has been reached with Manchester City, including payment of compensation, and a separate confidential settlement with Maresca under which he will pay compensation.

Alonso Appointed as Replacement

Looking ahead, Chelsea confirmed Xabi Alonso as their new manager for the next season, describing him as 'a Manager who has an exceptional football mind and is a professional of the highest integrity.' The club expressed confidence that Alonso can deliver the success supporters deserve.
