The game did not begin favorably for the US team, who were considered the favorites entering the match. Canada managed to seize an early advantage when Kristin O'Neill scored the opening goal early in the second period, assisted by Laura Stacey. This put the US in a position of having to fight back to avoid what would have been a significant Olympic upset against their rivals.

There, Brady was photographed in a playful moment with Earle the night before the Super Bowl at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
