Olympic gymnastics icon Simone Biles traded the luxury of a VIP suite for an up-close view on the sidelines this weekend, taking on the official role of guest photographer for a major NFL showdown.
From Spectator to Sideline Snapper
The surprise move was announced by the NFL ahead of the Chicago Bears versus San Francisco 49ers Sunday Night Football clash. In a social media video, Biles, camera in hand, revealed her new temporary job, stating she was there to "take some photographs." Her primary subject was her husband, Green Bay Packers safety Jonathan Owens, who was playing in one of the season's most significant games.
This marks a distinct change for Biles, who is more accustomed to watching games from a private box, often seen celebrating with friends. Since stepping back from elite competition, the 28-year-old has frequently supported Owens as his professional American football career progresses.
High Stakes on the Field
The game itself carried considerable weight in the NFL season. Entering the match, the Chicago Bears held an 11-5 record and had just clinched the NFC North division title—their first since 2018—without playing, thanks to the Green Bay Packers' loss. The contest against the 49ers remained crucial for Chicago's battle to secure the top seed in the NFC conference.
A Growing Trend of Star Photographers
Biles is not the first high-profile athlete to assume this unique role for the league. Fellow Olympic champion Suni Lee served as guest photographer for the Minnesota Vikings' Christmas Day game against the Detroit Lions, which was broadcast live on Netflix.
The trend extends beyond gymnastics stars. NFL legend Marshawn Lynch tried his hand at photography during a pre-season game in August, and former baseball star Ken Griffey Jr. is now regularly seen covering major sporting events with his camera.
Biles's new sideline perspective provided a unique and personal vantage point, blending her status as a sporting legend with her role as a supportive partner, all while adding a fresh chapter to the NFL's engagement with celebrity fans.
